Backyard Vegetable Garden

I have a big 20'X3 "area in the yard would be perfect for a vegetable garden. Having grown up in the city that I have very little clue about gardening.
Where do I begin to learn about gardening and more specifically on the gardens. Vegetables / herbs / fruits that I want to grow would be tomatoes, parsley, lemon suggestions, etc. about what is possible are also welcome.

I'm looking for recommendations on books, websites, etc.

I'm in central California, USA.
