Barley Malt Syrup

Posted on January 22, 2010.
Barley Malt SyrupWhat is the difference between malt powder, malted milk powder, barley malt powder, barley and malt syrup?

Please include a source, if possible.

Malt is made from grain - usually barley. The grain is soaked in water to germinate, then dried in the oven, then boiled and made into a syrup or dry powder. It is generally used as a healthier alternative sweetener, about half as sweet as normal sugar (sucrose). So to answer your question powdered malt and barley malt powder is the same thing - dried barley malt. Barley malt syrup is the "wet" version of the same stuff. Malted milk powder is milk powder to which the barley malt powder was added - you'll probably know it as Ovaltine or Horlicks, which was invented as an artificial food for infants by James and William Horlick in 1873.
Malt syrup is delicious and nutritious. We always have a jar of it at home and enjoy it for cereals, pancakes, etc. Make your own Horlicks - heat a pan of milk and stir in some malt. milkshakes Pour over ice or make malt. It is a great vitamin supplement too - just eat off the spoon. Flows of large amounts of it to the convalescent or those undergoing medical procedures such as chemotherapy, is easily digested and very nutritious. My son has thrived on hot malted milk, in addition to breastfeeding, and four years, he still loves to bedtime - in addition to eating off the spoon when it is close enough to pot!
Use it in your cooking and baking as a sugar substitute - in general, if your recipe calls for 1 cup sugar substitute: 1 and 1 / 3 cups of malt syrup and reduce the liquid (milk or water) by 1 / 4 cup. Add a little more baking powder or baking soda to make it lighter.
Malt is expensive at the pharmacy - not a box of beer from the United Nations-hopping malt (light, medium or yellow) to your local beverage shop or a supermarket. Make sure it is unhopped or it will be bitter and unpleasant - and you ask how my family and I can eventually benefit all!

how the ingredients are added to the powder the most prominent example is mostly malt malt powder, malted milk powder is mostly malt with milk powder based, and barley malt powder is mainly barley first with powdered malt syrup and malt barley is the main ingredient of barley malt syrup in a form not powder.
