I do not know about Sydney, Melbourne, but we have two weekly magazines as free music promotion (BEAT and Inpress) that are distributed by the stations in the city (record shops, cafes etc.).
They advertise concerts and CD releases and reviews, promote and coming artists, bands interview and so on. In return, they also have a classified section advertising for musicians of different groups. Do you have any equivalent to this in Sydney? If so, the presentation of an advertisement is an excellent way to start.
Alternatively, you can also try to respond to an ad rather than submitting one - with all your equipment, you are sure fire hit for someone looking for a guitarist.
In addition, the use of the Internet to your advantage (as you do).
Join forums band, bands in particular in Australia. It is a place where you're always bound to find other young musicians.
