Growing Asparagus From Seed

Posted on January 24, 2010.
Growing Asparagus From SeedI read it is very difficult to grow asparagus from seed. Has anyone been successful?

growing from seed asparagus

I grew from seed of asparagus this year and had great success. It was quite by chance. I collected seeds of wild asparagus few years ago and forgotten. When I planted this year, I thought I was planting something else ... did not know my mistake until the seeds were up. I had great germination ... about 80 percent. I only stratify the seed in the refrigerator (in the wet sand wet PAS) for 10 days and then I planted in a seed flat. Since then I have had ppl tell me it was difficult to grow from seed. Go figure ... Now if I had "planned" to drive him maybe he would not have turned out so well ... lol.

My father others who have replanted, but it took several years to get large enough to harvest so as not to kill the plants. It can be done, just a long time, and they seem to have low germination rates. We are in a cold area, although, so it can be done.

It's a fun thing to try, but if you want asparagus you'd better go with crowns and planting the seeds as a novelty.

Asparagus is grown root stock, and even then it takes a few years does not select anything to get your culture in a good performance. You want to plant in the fall. Plant at least 12 plants by eating asparagus in your household.

Piece of cake. Used my foot to make a shallow groove, dropped in the seeds from existing plants, the benefits of eating two years later. Do you want seeds?

Nope. Order fixes from a good company, as eburgess.com, michiganbulb.com, etc.
