Pickle Recipe

My aunt (she died about 3 years ago) gave me his recipe for lime pickle. It uses cucumbers, vinegar, sugar, etc but I do not understand this part:
Cut the cucumbers and cover with 2 cups of solutions of lime, 2 gallon of water and socks for 24 hours, stirring occasionally.
Any ideas if this is a cotton sock, and what is it?
