Ultra Uranium responds to environmental concerns As government leaders and businesses are turning to uranium as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, environmental groups demanding that companies act responsibly resources. Recently, I spoke with the president of Ultra Uranium Corp. [TSX: V. ULU], Ray Roland, for ultra position on this issue.
In 2005, the company owns 100% guaranteed project Kalnica-Selec uranium in Slovakia mountains of western Považska½ Inovec. The property has been explored by Uranovy Prieskum State Enterprise (UP), managed by the former Czechoslovak government. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, UP conducted exploration and development area of 28.91 square kilometers. This work was interrupted in the 1990s because of falling world prices of uranium.
In February of this year, Ultra Uranium received a technical report on the project Kalnica Selec-by geologist Dr. Boris Molak, PhD., P. Geo (BC). The report details the promising results of historical results Uranovy Prieskum radiometric surveys, geological mapping, pitting and trenching extensive vertical and horizontal drilling and tunneling. Dr. Molak, a native Slovak, believes that this region has a promising potential for the discovery of additional mineralization deposits.
In recent months, another resource company exploring for uranium in Slovakia, Tournigan Gold Corp., has received a strong reaction from Greenpeace and SOSNA (a local environmental group). The group drafted a petition supported by at least 32,000 protest of Tournigan Jahodna project, located approximately 5 miles from the 250,000 inhabitants of Kosice. The protesters are mainly concerned with the effects of mining on a protected bird sanctuary nearby, water reservoir and recreational park in the city.
Although Ultra Uranium has not yet experienced these remonstrances and could not comment on the situation Tournigan Mr. Roland said, "We know it will be environmental issues that we have to solve before we do anything in the way of extraction. We will take the initiative to prevent such environmental problems that may arise. We do not expect any huge problems, but before you go inside and make a drilling program, For example, we would talk to local people. And we have a staff of Slovakia, who knows to do this kind of thing. "
There are two villages, each with populations around 2,000 to Kalnica and selection, but they are not located in areas where exploration will resume. I also spoke with Dr. Molak, who said that during his next trip to Slovakia he plans to organize a presentation and talk to local communities. This presentation will explain the company's plans and intentions in the region and help alleviate misconceptions local residents or environmental concerns.
Because many people associated uranium and nuclear waste carcinogenic radiation many misconceptions of the white hot metal existence. However, business processes and environmental aspects of uranium mining are common to all metal mining.
In Situ Leach (ISL) extraction techniques are safe, environmentally friendly and cost. The method is to pump the liquid through the ore while still in the ground to recover the desired minerals. This process causes negligible disturbance and does not generate residues. Most of the radioactivity remains well underground. There is a minimal increase in the release of radon and ore dust produced from this process. What methods of ISL are achievable or not depends on site geology and location of groundwater. Uranium ore suitable for ISL occurs in permeable sand or sandstone located below the groundwater table.
